A mission failed - Day 23: Ennis to West Yellowstone (73 miles)

Taking it all in

Day 23 was a bad day. It is the first day on our Odyssey that we did not make it to our planned destination. We have come to the conclusion that we are fair weather campers. This cold spell and threat of rain is doing us in.

We made it as far as the tourist town of West Yellowstone, just outside of the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. We were meant to get another 14 miles down the road to camp in the park at Madison Junction Campground, in the middle of nature with the bears, bison and elk. But we arrived into West Yellowstone later in the afternoon than usual (about 4:30pm) after a later start in the morning because it was too cold to get out of our cosy sleeping bags, tired from riding uphill most of the day then into a headwind on the final flat section of the day, rain clouds in the distance ahead of us, again chilled to the bone from the wind and lack of sunshine, and an overnight low of 32F / 0C forecast.

It was just too tempting to run into the Slippery Otter for a beer and call around to find some cheap(ish) accommodation in town. Yep, the promise of a warm room, comfy bed and hot shower lead to our epic fail of the day.

We're disappointed with ourselves but we're enjoying watching Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill on Conan at the moment on TV instead of snuggling in our tent.

Enough said. Here are some pics from our day.
