Good bye B.O.B - Day 5: Coburg to McKenzie Bridge (62 miles)

I'm happy to say that today was not my bonk day. It's amazing what a good night's sleep in a soft bed with a belly full of pasta can do for you. My legs were still sore this morning but somehow I managed to get through today's ride. It helped that the terrain suited me. A long gradual climb along the fast flowing McKenzie River, watching rafters and dories take on the small rapids, passing the Leaburg Dam and the Goodpasture and Belknap historic covered bridges made the day pass quickly.

Katie and Steve set a good pace and we covered the distance in good time despite a 1.5 hour lunch stop outside the General Store in Blue River as we waited for our pizza to cook.

Downtown Blue River was a hub of local activity

Tonight we're staying at Paradise Campground, a beautiful National Forest campground along the McKenzie River. I can hear the river's icy water flowing from our tent. The McKenzie River apparently has some of the coldest water in Oregon, originating from far underground. It made my feet go numb pretty quickly but felt great on my weary legs.

Katie has decided that she wants to try and go even more lightweight so she has now set up her road bike with a rear rack and 2 x Sea to Summit dry bags occy strapped to the rack in lieu of panniers plus her camping gear on top. First test ride will be tomorrow up the McKenzie Pass, and if all goes well we will be saying goodbye to her B.O.B trailer for good.

Steve and I have finally conceded that it would make our days on the bike more enjoyable to drop some of our extra / unnecessary items. Tiffany has come out to meet us again and will take our extra gear and mail them back to Houston for us. So what have the girls convinced us to get rid of:

  • Moisturiser and hair product
  • Extra socks, shirt, pants
  • Head torch and spare batteries
  • 3rd pair of cycling Knicks
  • Most of our camp cooking equipment except for the alcohol stove, pot and 1 spoon

We are still keeping a lot of our luxury items, (no, we're not willing to give up our camp pillow) and Steve gets to keep his 1 pair of underwear. Overall, we are dropping about +1kg each in weight, give or take, Katie about 2.5kg. Hopefully this will help us get up the pass a lot easier tomorrow and hopefully won't make our speeds too far different so that it makes it harder to ride together in our little road train.
