We're not in Texas anymore

Today was a great day. Being our last day where we will not be on our bikes for hours on end, this may be the last of our great days for a while. We are in the city of Portland, Oregon which we have dubbed "Beer and Beard Nation". Steve feels completely at home here, despite suffering a slight inferiority complex. There has been a lot of beard envy going on!

Flying into Portland

We flew in yesterday and were greeted at the airport by our friends Katie and Tiffany who have taken us out to experience the great craft beers of Portland.

Tasting some dark ales at Bunker Tap Room

Today we stumbled across the Beers and Bones Festival right across from Rogue Ale House.

For such a small festival there were so many new and different Portland beers for us to try (most of which we'd never heard of before) as well as some really good BBQ. Living in Texas we have become quite picky about the quality of our BBQ but here in Portland they definitely know how to BBQ just as well. It was also great to be able to sit out in the sun and not be sweating buckets within 5 minutes. We will not be missing the Texas heat and humidity for the next 2 months, that's for sure.

Our blind beer tasting session

We had a fun afternoon back at Tiffany's parents place where we set up a blind lager beer tasting. Steve, for some reason which I still cannot wrap my head around, is a massive fan of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (or PBR as it is commonly known), an old school American lager brewed since the 1890's that has recently become popular again amongst the hipster crowd. Apparently one of it's new target markets are facial hair clubs. I think they may stock PBR's at Dan Murphy's Down Under, so if you're passing by, grab a six pack and give it a go. With so many flavourful craft beers around in America it is just about criminal to declare a love of PBR. So we thought we would put Steve to the test to see whether he could distinguish the PBR taste amongst a mix of commercial and craft American beers. Included in the mix was:

  1. Coors Banquet
  2. Budweiser
  3. Full Sail Helles Lager
  4. Portland Brewery Honey Beer
  5. PBR

Needless to say, Steve had an epic fail moment, not only failing to distinguish his precious PBR, but failing to guess any of the beers correctly. Embarrassingly enough, I was the only one of us to recognise the obviously not so distinct PBR flavour and Katie proved to know her beers the best getting 3 out of 5 right. Unanimously we all agreed that Coors was the skankiest beer of the lot! So, PBR is not the worst tasting beer out there.

Tomorrow we will embark on Day 1 of our cycling odyssey. We have started to question our decisions on what we have chosen to carry with us on this ride (thanks to Katie showing us how an ultra lightweight, ultra minimalist travels) but we are both too stubborn to ditch anything that we have brought across with us.

Yes, we will go on to suffer with our load and yes, you will hear all about it!
