Today was meant to be an easier day, so we made use of our hotel room and had a little sleep in. After our first diner breakfast of the trip at J's Cafe we were out and rolling by 9:30am. Anticipating a flat ride, the rolling hills through the countryside coming out of Monmouth started to annoy me.
My legs definitely were not feeling fresh today. There was a noticeable lack of power in every pedal stroke and each small incline was making my thighs burn. I was hoping to be able to spin thru the day at an easy pace knowing we have 2 climbing days ahead of us straight after this to get over either the McKenzie or Santiam Pass.
Luckily the beautiful scenery took my mind off the aches in my legs for a little while as we rode past dry farm land being turned by tractors, rectangular hay bales stacked 5 or more stories high with wildflowers by the roadside, green hills as a backdrop and an almost clear blue sky.
Finally the road flattened out but did nothing to subdue the burn in my thighs. Struggling to keep, up I tucked in behind Steve to draft my way to our end destination, grateful for his current broadness which reduced my workload immensely.

Taking a break in Corvalis |
Tonight we have a bed to sleep in at Katie's 2nd cousins place in Coburg. Thank you Michelle and Andy for your kind hospitality and good company.
Tomorrow will be another day on the road, however I fear there may be a bonk day coming on for me very soon! The temptation is getting stronger and stronger to ditch some gear - I am now seriously wishing we did not bring so much stuff.
