The calm before the storm: Day 14 - Riggins to White Bird (32 miles)

Early morning light along US95

Today is once again our quasi rest day after being on the open road for 2 weeks now. This is also in preparation for what we have coming up ahead of us tomorrow. The climb out of White Bird looks quite daunting on the elevation profile.

Tomorrow's ride

We are riding through a beautiful part of Idaho, following the mighty Salmon River through the middle of the majestic Salmon River Canyon.

Steve and I had to ride into Riggins this morning to get our morning cappacino and we left Riggins about 35 minutes behind schedule at 8:50am much to Katie's dismay as we wanted an early start to try to avoid the strong headwinds that blow in later in the morning. By 9:09am we had crossed the Salmon River which marks the boundary between time zones in Idaho. Back on Pacific time, turning the clock back an hour, we were actually now riding ahead of our planned departure of 8:15 am. Phew!

Thankfully this short ride day really did turn out to be an easy ride day with only a few crazy Idaho drivers ruining an otherwise peaceful ride spent taking in the scenery of the canyon, river and rapids.

After stopping in the town of White Bird for lunch at Mac's Diner and to re-provision for the evening and breakfast tomorrow (choices for camp food were slim at the grocery store and a lot of the foods were out of date), we rode backwards about 3 miles to the neat Hammer Creek Recreation Site to camp for the night beside the river. The camp host directed us to a great camp site with river access and a nice sandy beach.

Apparently we are in rattlesnake country out here, so I am watching where I step very carefully. I figure I won't be able to rely on Steve or Katie to fend off any rattlesnakes if I accidentally disturb one!
